  • Liver cirrhosis is the 9th leading cause of death in the United States; each year over 58,000 lives are lost to this liver disease that is has been linked to long term alcoholism.
  • Over time, excessive alcohol use can lead to the development of chronic diseases, neurological impairments and social problems. These include but are not limited to: Cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, colon, and breast. In general, the risk of cancer increases with increasing amounts of alcohol.
  • The risk of a person developing a maladaptive drinking problem that repeatedly causes life problems is more than doubled for persons who began drinking before the age of 14, as compared to those who began drinking at age 21.
  • Those diagnosed as having Fetal Alcohol Syndrome had IQ scores ranging from 20-105 with a mean of 68. Subjects also demonstrated poor concentration and attention.
