According to the most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), alcohol is the drug that is used most often by high school seniors; although they cannot legally purchase alcohol, over 90% of them have tried it and almost on third of them have reported that they have had more than five drinks at one time within the past month.
When alcohol and tobacco are used in combination, the effect of each is heightened.
Alcohol consumption can play a role in causing depression; the irony of this is that many people drink alcohol in an effort to alleviate their low mood. The higher the amount of alcohol that is consumed, the greater the number of symptoms of depression. However, symptoms of depression have been reported to decrease dramatically or disappear completely alcohol abstinence.
There are two types of alcohol problems in the world, willful abuse and pathological dependence, also referred to as alcoholism; increasing the difficulty in obtaining alcohol has been reported to reduce alcohol abuse but not in cases of alcohol dependence.
