Caffeinated Alcoholic Beverages (COKs) are premixed beverages that combine alcohol, caffeine, and other stimulants. They may be malt- or distilled-spirits-based and usually have higher alcohol content than beer (i.e., 5%-12% on average for COKs and 4%-5% for beer). The caffeine content in these beverages is usually not reported.
A study in Midwestern states found that 46% of ninth graders who reported drinking alcohol in the previous month said they obtained the alcohol from a person aged 21 or older.
Although medical amnesty policies are well meaning and offer tremendous opportunities to potentially reduce the number of alcohol related deaths on college campuses, they are based on assumptions that the individuals involved are educated in identifying and understanding the risks that are associated with the symptoms of alcohol poisoning.
