  • Studies show that children of alcoholic parents are at greater risk than other children of becoming alcoholics.
  • The legal limit for drinking is the alcohol level above which an individual is subject to legal penalties such as being arrested, or the loss of a driver's license; in many states, driving while intoxicated can lead to mandatory jail time.
  • Social factors can often contribute to alcoholism, as many alcoholics often have poor social skills and do not function well in a variety of social situations. These individuals may initially begin to drink in order to feel more comfortable in social situations, but may later cross over the invisible line between social drinking into alcoholism.
  • Problem drinkers are mostly found in young adults between the ages of 18 and 29. Conversely, the age group with the fewest alcohol problems is adults who are 65 years old or older.
